Flavours

Custom-flavoured compounded medications that animals actually want to take.

Veterinary Medication Flavouring

One of the biggest challenges pet owners and veterinarians face is getting animals to accept their medication. Whether it's a cat that refuses a tablet, a dog that spits out a capsule, or a horse that turns away from a syringe of paste, poor palatability can mean missed doses, incomplete treatment courses, and worse clinical outcomes.

At Compounding 4 Vet, we work closely with veterinarians and pet owners across Australia to custom-flavour compounded medications so they suit the tastes and preferences of each individual animal. By matching the right flavour to the right species, dosage form, and active ingredient, we help make medication time as stress-free as possible — for the animal, the owner, and the veterinary team.

Why Does Flavouring Matter?

Medication compliance — the extent to which a patient receives their full prescribed course of treatment — is directly linked to treatment success. In veterinary medicine, compliance depends almost entirely on the owner's ability to administer the medication and the animal's willingness to accept it. Flavoured medications consistently lead to better acceptance, less wasted medication, and more complete treatment courses.

Flavouring is especially important when:

  • An animal is on long-term or lifelong medication, such as for hyperthyroidism, heart disease, epilepsy, or behavioural conditions
  • The active ingredient has a bitter, unpleasant, or metallic taste that the animal detects and rejects
  • The patient is a fussy eater, is nauseous, or has a reduced appetite due to illness
  • Previous attempts to medicate using commercial formulations have failed
  • The owner is struggling with stress or anxiety around medication time
  • The animal is an exotic species, bird, or small mammal with very specific taste preferences

When an animal willingly accepts a flavoured medication, it reduces the risk of being bitten or scratched during administration, eliminates the need to hide medication in food (which doesn't always work), and gives owners confidence that the full dose has been consumed.

Our Flavour Range

We offer a wide selection of flavours across two categories, allowing veterinarians and pet owners to choose the best match for their patient. All of our flavourings are pharmaceutical grade and vegan compliant — they contain no animal proteins and are suitable for patients with dietary sensitivities or known protein allergies.

Choosing the Right Flavour by Species

Different species have very different taste preferences. What works well for a Labrador is unlikely to appeal to a parrot or a horse. Our pharmacists can recommend the most appropriate flavour based on the species, but the following general guidelines can help when placing an order.

Dogs

Dogs are generally the most accepting of flavoured medications. Savoury flavours such as chicken, beef, liver, peanut butter, and cheese are the most popular choices. Most dogs will readily accept a flavoured liquid, chewable treat, or capsule. Some dogs also respond well to sweet flavours like banana or marshmallow.

Cats

Cats are notoriously fussy and have a much stronger aversion to bitter tastes. Fish-based flavours such as tuna and triple fish tend to be the most accepted, followed by chicken and liver. Cats lack sweet taste receptors, so fruit and sweet flavours are generally not recommended. For difficult cats, transdermal preparations applied to the inner ear flap can bypass the need for oral administration entirely.

Horses

Horses tend to prefer sweet and familiar flavours. Apple and molasses are the most commonly requested equine flavours, followed by peppermint and honey. These flavours work particularly well in oral pastes and powder formulations that can be mixed into feed. Horses have a strong sense of smell, so an appealing aroma is just as important as taste.

Exotic Species, Birds & Small Mammals

Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, and reptiles each have unique dietary preferences. Fruit flavours such as strawberry, banana, and apple are generally well suited to herbivorous species and birds. Ferrets often prefer savoury or fish-based flavours. Our pharmacists can advise on the most appropriate flavour and dosage form based on the species and the medication being compounded.

Pharmaceutical Grade & Vegan Compliant

All flavourings used by Compounding 4 Vet are pharmaceutical grade, meaning they meet the strict quality and purity standards required for use in medicinal preparations. Unlike food-grade flavourings, pharmaceutical-grade flavourings are manufactured under controlled conditions and are tested for consistency, stability, and absence of contaminants.

Every flavouring in our range is also 100% vegan compliant. This means that even our meat-style and fish-style flavours — such as chicken, beef, tuna, and liver — contain no animal-derived proteins or ingredients. They are synthetic flavour compounds that replicate the taste and aroma of these foods without using any animal products.

This is particularly important for patients with:

  • Food allergies or protein sensitivities — animals on elimination diets or with confirmed allergies to specific proteins (such as chicken or beef) can safely receive a chicken- or beef-flavoured medication because the flavouring contains no actual animal protein
  • Novel protein or hydrolysed diets — the medication flavouring will not interfere with dietary trials being conducted to identify food allergies
  • Owners who prefer vegan or cruelty-free products — our flavourings align with these values without compromising on palatability

Flavouring & Dosage Forms

Flavouring works hand-in-hand with the dosage form to maximise acceptance. The type of preparation affects how the animal experiences the flavour, so our pharmacists consider both together when recommending a formulation.

Flavoured Liquids & Suspensions

The most common dosage form for flavouring. The animal tastes the flavour directly, so a well-matched flavour makes a significant difference. Ideal for cats, small dogs, exotics, and any patient where precise dosing by volume is required.

Chewable Medicated Treats

A popular option for dogs. The medication is incorporated into a flavoured, palatable base that the animal chews and swallows voluntarily, similar to a commercial treat. Particularly effective for dogs on long-term medications where daily administration needs to be as easy as possible.

Oral Pastes

Commonly used for horses and large animals. The flavoured paste is administered via an oral syringe directly into the mouth. Apple and molasses flavours are particularly effective in equine pastes, masking the taste of bitter active ingredients.

Capsules & Tablets

While the medication inside a capsule is not directly tasted, flavoured tablets can encourage voluntary acceptance. For animals that bite into capsules before swallowing, a flavoured fill can help mask the active ingredient. Capsules can also be opened and sprinkled onto food if needed.

Tips for Administering Flavoured Medications

For Pet Owners

  • Offer the medication confidently — animals can pick up on hesitation. Treat medication time as routine, not as a confrontation.
  • Use a small amount of food as a chaser — if giving a liquid directly, follow it with a small treat or favourite food to reinforce the positive experience.
  • Don't mix medication into a full meal — if the animal doesn't finish the bowl, they won't receive the full dose. Use a small amount of food instead, or administer directly.
  • Store medications correctly — flavoured liquids and suspensions should be stored according to the label instructions to maintain both stability and palatability.
  • Shake suspensions well before each dose — this ensures the medication is evenly distributed and your pet receives the correct amount.
  • Let us know if a flavour isn't working — we can often reformulate with an alternative flavour for the next order. Every animal is different, and sometimes a simple flavour change is all it takes.

For Veterinary Professionals

  • Specify a flavour on the prescription — if you know your patient's preference or the owner has feedback from previous orders, including this on the script helps us prepare the best formulation.
  • Ask about the active ingredient — some drugs have particularly strong or bitter tastes that pair better with specific flavours. Our pharmacists can advise which combinations work best.
  • Consider the species and patient temperament — a fractious cat may benefit more from a transdermal preparation than a flavoured oral liquid, regardless of how good the flavour is.
  • Discuss compliance with the owner — educating owners about the importance of completing the full course and offering practical tips can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All of our flavourings are pharmaceutical grade and specifically selected for use in compounded medications. They are rigorously tested for purity, consistency, and stability. Because they are vegan and contain no animal-derived proteins, they are also suitable for patients with food allergies or sensitivities.

Yes. When placing an order — either online, by phone, or by email — you or your veterinarian can specify your preferred flavour. If you're unsure which flavour to choose, our pharmacists are happy to recommend the best option for your animal's species and medication.

Yes. Because all of our flavourings are vegan and synthetic, they do not contain any actual animal proteins. A chicken-flavoured medication from Compounding 4 Vet contains no real chicken, so it is safe for animals with chicken protein allergies. The same applies to all of our meat-style and fish-style flavours. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with your veterinarian or our pharmacists.

Cats lack functional sweet taste receptors, so they cannot detect sweetness the way dogs, horses, or humans can. A strawberry or banana flavour would offer no palatability benefit for a cat and may not mask bitter-tasting medications effectively. Fish-based and savoury flavours are far more effective at encouraging acceptance in feline patients.

Horses generally respond best to sweet and aromatic flavours. Apple and molasses are the most popular choices for equine medications, followed by peppermint and honey. These work well across oral pastes, powder formulations, and liquids. Because horses rely heavily on smell when deciding whether to accept food or medication, a strong, familiar aroma is key. Our pharmacists can help you choose the best option based on the specific medication and dosage form.

Yes. If your pet is refusing their medication, let us know when you place your next order and we can prepare it with a different flavour. Animals can develop preferences or aversions over time, so it's not uncommon to switch flavours between orders. Our pharmacists can suggest alternatives based on your pet's species and what has worked for similar patients.

Yes. If the prescribing veterinarian prefers an unflavoured formulation, or if the medication is being administered in a way where flavouring is unnecessary (such as a transdermal gel), we can prepare it without added flavouring. Simply note this preference on the prescription or let us know when ordering.

No. Because our flavourings are vegan and contain no animal-derived proteins, they will not introduce any food proteins that could compromise an elimination diet or food trial. This makes our compounded medications a safe option for patients undergoing allergy investigations. As always, discuss any concerns with your veterinarian.

A good starting point is to think about what your pet already enjoys eating. If your dog goes crazy for chicken treats, chicken flavour is a safe bet. If your cat only eats fish-based food, tuna or triple fish is likely to be well accepted. Our pharmacists are also available to advise based on experience with thousands of patients across all species — just call us on 1300 345 877 and we're happy to help.

Flavouring is included as a standard part of our compounding service for most formulations. There is no additional charge for selecting a flavour when placing your order. For specific pricing details, visit our price list or contact our team.
